RESIDENTIAL ROOFS
Residential Roofing Materials
What kind of
roofing system you need or can obtain will depend largely on the type of
roof currently on your home.
Most roofing
material can be categorized into three categories:
1.
Composition
Shingles:
The majority of the homes in America use composition shingles. The
shingles are made of a base (organic or fiberglass) that is saturated
with asphalt and coated with minerals on one side to resist weathering.
The fiberglass shingles are more flexible and stronger than the organic
shingles. Shingles come in a wide variety of colors. Composition roofs
can be overlaid with a new roof if the initial roof is a single layer
and in good condition. Their life expectancy is 20, 25, or 30 years,
depending on the rating of the particular shingle. [see photo]
2. Dimensional
Shingles:
Similar to composition shingles, these shingles are thicker, and can
create a more custom appearance. More and more of the homes in our area
are opting for this quality material with a life expectancy of
approximately 40 years (depending on rating). [see photo]
3. Designer
Roofs: Designer roofs are an upgrade from the composition shingle and give the
home an elegant “designer look.” Designer roofs can consist
of cedar shakes, tile, metal or slate.
