Hiring a Roofing or Siding Contractor

The decision of getting your roof or siding done can be an overwhelming process. The first being the expense and the second how do you choose the right company to do the work.

Choosing the right roofing company can be daunting because of all the horror stories circulating about bad work or price gouging and lack of accountability. The best way to choose any professional to work on your home is a simple phone call to your City Building Department. Inquire who pulls the most permits in your community and who passes the inspections. Cities are not allowed to refer companies but they are allowed to share this information. Use this process when doing any work that requires a permit.

A permit assures each homeowner that the contractor hired has a license and insurance and is verifiable by the City. Having the company pull the permit relieves you of liability for faulty workmanship and gives the homeowner the opportunity to take further action if required. This assures confidence and peace of mind that an established and professional company is in good standing.

Another way to choose a contractor is to ask friends, family and co-workers about their experience with home improvement companies that they have used. Referrals are most likely a trusted way consider a company.

Once the company is chosen to do your roof or siding then prepare your property for the invasion of a crew. Move landscaping or deck and porch items close to the house to a safe area or bring it to the attention of the crew and they will protect or move the items that may be difficult to move. Do a walk around with the sales person or crew prior to beginning work to be aware of hazards or concerns and assure the property is in good condition before the work begins. Do the same when the work is complete.

The fun part about getting your roof or siding done is pulling up a chair and watching our amazing crew transform the look of your home.

Financing for Roofing and Siding

Chess Roofing & Siding qualifies for the Wells Fargo Home Improvement Financing Program. How it works is simple. We need a few minutes of time to acquire personal information regarding the application to verify client qualification. If qualified the program we offer is 12 months same as cash.

We must share with Wells Fargo the estimated cost of the job. If approved Wells Fargo will have the client contact information and will send a Wells Fargo credit card with information regarding the line of credit extended.

The credit line allows each client the opportunity to not only use our services but the services of other home improvement companies who are qualified to participate in the Wells Fargo program.  The program is a separate entity from Chess Roofing & Siding so all business transactions once approved will be handled through Wells Fargo for payments.

There is a drawback to the program that we caution our clients. If payments are missed or late regardless how close to payoff interest will be back charged starting with the start date of enlisting into the program.

Why Choose James Hardie Siding

10/19/2015

James Hardie siding is a composite siding made of cement, sand and wood pulp.  The product became popular when asbestos siding was determined to be unsafe and another durable product was needed to withstand the ever changing climates.

Many styles and colors of James Hardie are available to choose from which allows the homeowner to maintain the character of the home. Other manufacturers have tried to replicate the James Hardie product but thus far have failed to stand up to the quality and longevity that James Hardie set in place.

Although it may be above average in cost compared to vinyl siding and other products it adds great value to the home where installed.

Installing Hardie siding takes approximately three times longer to install than vinyl siding and may require each homeowner to be a bit more patient with the process and the outcome. It is the labor in addition to the product that raises the cost of the job. We guarantee you will not be disappointed in the choices made when choosing James Hardie Siding

Chess Roofing & Siding is an excellent resource to use for consulting about design and color to achieve your ultimate desired look of your home.

Winter Roof & Gutter Maintenance

Autumn is here already and summer is all but a blur so the time has come to prepare for the season of cold, snow and ice.

Peace of mind can easily be obtained with a few easy maintenance tasks to assure a roof from leaking. Make sure all debris is cleared from around the following: chimney, pipes, skylights, vents, antennas, satellite dishes and valleys.

Take the time to thoroughly clean gutters and downspouts. The easiest way is use a leaf blower and a hose. If debris has built up over past seasons use a garden trowel and a garbage bag. Make sure the bottom of downspouts are cleared away and run the hose water down each downspout to clear any blockages.

If the spikes have come loose and the gutters are tipping forward or there are gaps between gutters and the fascia board, using a hammer tap them back into place.

Now if all or some if this is difficult to do, please call Chess Roofing & Siding and we will come out and do the work at an affordable cost. If gutters and downspouts are in poor condition Chess Roofing & Siding can replace them with seamless gutters using screws and brackets.

Another option, once we clean out your gutters and downspouts or install new gutters is to install a permanent gutter cover to eliminate any need for concern in the future. It is preferred gutters be relatively new and seamless. It is also best if the gutters are screwed with brackets rather than spikes and furls. Spikes and furls have a tendency of working loose due to Michigan climate of hot and cold with expansion and contraction of the wood. By using brackets and screws the gutters always remain secured.

Roofing and Siding and Insulation

Perhaps you thought about doing your roof earlier in the year.  Perhaps you even took it one step further and called us for an estimate.  Well it is time to take the next step.  Make the decision to move forward.

If you did call earlier in the year you suspected time is near.  According to the latest weather forecast this winter is going to be harsh and the utility costs are going up.  Take the worry out wondering if your roof will make it through another winter.  Chances are it won’t.  If we have heavy snowfalls and high velocity winds with freezing rain your risk for further damage and leaking increases.  Do you want to take that risk?  If so make sure you have clean and empty buckets to use as catch basins.

Yes, roofing may be done all year but many more factors come into play.  Crews do not work when any weather conditions are extreme; no precipitation (rain or snow), icy surfaces, heavy winds extreme cold or hot.

The fall is also a great time to consider insulation at the same time.

If you thought your husband was going to call, he didn’t.  If you thought your wife was going to call, she didn’t.  If you thought your partner was going to call, wrong again.  So it is up to you to call Chess Roofing and Siding for a free estimate.  248-398-1050 or www.chessroofing.us

Curb Appeal

Out with the old in with the new

Out with the old in with the new

This home is the neighborhood attention getter, gloating its pizzaz with color and style. It was once a washed out stained textured metal siding offering little character and no curb appeal.

The homeowners decided to step out of the box and go for the gold when choosing their colors and products.

Wow! is the discriptive used by the homeowner’s. There is no lack of character and curb appeal has been ultimately achieved.

This too can happen to you.

The products used for this great look are:

  • Certainteed Monogram 46 4″ exposure clapboard (Timberland color)
  • Cedar Impressions – perfection Dbl 7″ (Hearthstone color)
  • Trim – Hickory/Clay
  • Gutters & Downs seamless, screwed with brackets

Spring hasn’t quite sprung but leaks may have begun.

According to the calendar, the moon and all the weather reports Spring came two weeks ago. With the temperatures still hovering around freezing every night and needing to dress in multiple layers I challenge this so called season and believe Winter still lingers in Metro Detroit.

Although the snow is gone and most of the ice dams have melted and faded away now is the time to look in the closets and corners of the ceiling to see if there are any cracks or discoloration. If so this may be a tell tale sign of a roof leak or shingle breakdown.

If pieces of siding have come loose or blown off Chess Roofing and Siding is able to repair or replace the pieces.

Chess Roofing and Siding is able to diagnose such problems and remediate the problem for a reasonable cost. The estimates are free and you speak directly with the owner of the company.
